4. Paul Breitner
Paul Breitner is one of the most decorated German footballers and was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Time Team also was named by Pelé one of the top 125 greatest living footballers at a FIFA Awards ceremony in 2004 He is also one of four footballers – along with Pele, Vava and Zinedine Zidane – to have scored in two separate World Cup finals.
But his reputation was tainted along with many other players after West Germany’s group game against Austria in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Before the fixture, Algeria looked all set to qualify for their first ever World cup having played their last group game a day before. But a slender 1-0 victory for West Germany would mean that both West Germany and Austria would qualify and Algeria would be knocked out. Paul Breitner and his team mates did exactly that and FIFA couldn’t ban any of them because they technically didn’t break any rule.
