Football as a sport is synonymous with fans travelling across the world to see their team play and passionately singing their favourite players’ chant. Nevertheless, it does have a darker side that rears its ugly head from time to time. Corruption, favoritism, nepotism, tax evasions and match fixing are some of the scandals that have surfaced in recent times. Here are 5 of the most corrupt men in football.

5. Giuseppe Signori

Giuseppe “Beppe” Signori is one of those footballers who was known for his powerful left foot and a popular trivia is alongside Sinisa Mihajlovic, he is one of two players to have scored a hat-trick from free kicks in Serie A. He was a decent striker for all the clubs he played for racking up 283 goals in 541 career league appearances and winning the Serie A top scorer award on three separate occasions. He also scored a dozen goals for the national team and was a part of the squad that finished runners-up in the 1994 World Cup.

Signori entered the dark world of betting post his retirement from world football and was arrested in 2011 for his part in match fixing in what was called as “Calcioscommesse” scandal. The verdict from the case saw that he was banned from any footballing activity for the next 5 years.
