One of the most shocking scandals that sent waves across Europe, the Calciopoli scandal tarnished the face of Italian football as it emerged that several Italian clubs were involved in match-fixing, bribing the referees to take favourable decisions and what not.

The scandal divulged the darker side of the beautiful game.

Some major clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were reported to have played a huge part in it. The Bianconeris, who were the champions of Italy that time, were stripped off the titles, including the one they won in 2005 and were relegated straight away to Serie B. Moreover, they were also banned from participating in the 2006-07 Champions League edition.

The scandal still has its effect on Italy’s top flight, which is no longer the league which ruled the roost in European football in the late 90s and early 2000.
