You may not remember that Marquez hasn’t yet hung up his boots for Mexico. He played his last club match for Atlas a few weeks ago and will now be participating in his last World Cup. He made his debut 21 years ago, as an 18-year old talented defender. Over the years he has plied his trade for Monaco and Barcelona and has earned plaudits and trophies with both. An elegant defender, Marquez’ last competition was the 2017 Confed Cup. He may not be in the starting XI, but Mexico will surely have him on the pitch when they will need to defend a lead. A legend of Mexico, and perhaps their best defender ever, Rafael Marquez will play in his 5th World Cup, a feat achieved by very few players in World football.
